HTC Desire, Server 2008 & Sage! In no particular order...Posted by: Kelvin Lawrance Tagged in: software

It's been a funny old couple of weeks. As the month end approaches its time to update the blog but I'm really not sure what to write about this time. It's not like I haven't been busy!
I could talk about the HTC Desire. I'm a month into a new contract with T-Mobile and feel I am finally getting close to having the perfect device. The Desire has done everything I have asked of it. I have fully integrated access to our corporate gmail based platform plus an Activesync link to my main clients exchange server. The Desire is able to handle the two accounts seamlessly with a single combined calendar and when added to the ability to view the calendars of colleagues or other family members, I finally feel that I can see everything that's going on in a single place.
I could talk about the complexities of Windows Server and ask questions as to why the different versions lack consistency and how you need a bit of luck and a following wind to find a combination of hardware and software that works for a specific environment. But that's probably a can of worms that I dont want to open just at the moment. Suffice to say it's been a trying two weeks but finally the office infrastructure is back in useable condition following the Sharepoint 2010 upgrade. Odd that the Microsoft environment is being held together with some Linux and server virtualisation technology though don't you think?
Or perhaps I should talk about Sage. Firstly, I don't profess to know much about accounting packages - it should be just one of those software tools that works and I dont have to think about. Doing the accounts is a tedious enough task without having to sort out technical issues with file permissions etc. Ok so maybe the problems were more about Active Directory accounts on the file server but I really think Line 50 should be more rebust in its handling of data files that have been relocated. To have software that just locks up on start up (without any sort of message) and requires a forced kill via that task manager just because a data file is marked as read-only really isn't good enough in this day and age. Anyway, rant over - I'm hardly likely to migrate from Sage now after years getting to grips with its unusual little foibles but I reserve the right to have a rant now and again.
In amongst all these internal technical challenges it's been a pretty good month on the client front but there's not much I can talk about at this moment in time.
Still not sure what to blog about but the train is nearing London so I'd better sign off for now. Drop me a line if you want to know more about any of the above but be sure I'd much rather talk about the joys of the Desire than the pain of MS Server or Sage!
